1 Day Malta Itinerary: Three Options
Malta is a small island with a huge variety of things to see and do, from historic streets to stunning coastlines. You can easily spend a day exploring the capital city, Valletta, or use it as a base to see other parts of the island.
Below are three options for a 1 Day Malta Itinerary—each gives you a different experience depending on how much you want to see, whether you prefer staying in the city, visiting multiple towns, or taking a full-day trip to Gozo.
Pick the one that fits your interests and schedule, and make sure to leave time for walking, enjoying Maltese food, and soaking in the views of the harbors and streets.
Option 1: Base Yourself in Valletta
This first itinerary option keeps you in the capital city for the full day. Valletta is easy to walk, close to major sites, and a good base for short trips around the island. You can also read my full Valletta itinerary for more detail.
Start your morning with a walking tour so you can learn the city’s layout and history.

Make sure you visit there top sites in the capital, whether it’s on your tour or on your own:

Stop at the Upper Barrakka Gardens for views of the Grand Harbour. If possible, plan your visit around the cannon salute at noon.

This option gives you more variety during your 1 day in Malta. You still base yourself in Valletta, but you visit places outside of the capital including Mdina, Rabat, the Three Cities, and Marsaxlokk. You will get a mix of history, quiet streets, and coastal views.
These places are all options, but you don’t have to cram them all into one day. Do as many as interest you.
Mdina and Rabat:
Spend your morning in the Silent City. Walk through the narrow streets, visit St. Paul’s Cathedral, and explore the viewpoints over the island. In Rabat, visit the catacombs or a small local museum.

Next, take a short boat or ferry ride across the harbor to Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua. Once you arrive, you can walk the waterfront, visit the fort, and see older residential areas and small streets

Valletta’s Main Sites:
If you have extra time, visit some sites in the capital city. If you can only see one or two, check out these:

Option 3: Valletta + Gozo Day Trip

You will stay in Valletta, but you spend the full day exploring Gozo, which is one of the three main islands in Malta. It has a slower pace than the capital city and gives you a good look at village life, cliffs, and historic sites.
You can reach Gozo by ferry or join a guided tour. A tour is usually the easiest way to see the main stops in one day. Most day trips include Victoria, where you can walk through the Citadel and see the views over the island. Many also take you to Dwejra Bay, the Inland Sea, and Xlendi. These areas show the coastal side of Gozo and give you a mix of bays, cliffs, and quiet walking paths.
