If you do not have a car, walk from town toward Ross Castle. This is one of the most accessible and scenic walks in the park and it’s what I did on my first trip to Killarney. The trail takes you along Lough Leane, and it is beautiful.

Ross Castle was built in the 15th century and sits right on the lake. It is one of the most iconic spots in Killarney National Park. Take time to walk around the grounds and enjoy the views. If you do have a car, you can still start at Ross Castle, just arrive early to avoid parking issues.

If you do not have a car and are exploring on foot, you may want to save Torc Waterfall for another trip. Instead, make your way back toward town and stop at St. Mary’s Cathedral. You can also visit Killarney House and Gardens, which is free and located right near the town center. You will still see best parts of Killarney, even without a car, trust me.
After spending the morning in nature, head back into town and take your time exploring. Killarney is small but lively, and it is the perfect place to wander without much of a plan. Walk through the main streets, browse local shops, and enjoy the atmosphere. If you need a break, stop for coffee and a pastry at John M Reidy Cafe before dinner.
You cannot spend 1 day in Killarney without ending it in a proper Irish pub. If you only choose one meal, make it Murphy’s Bar and Restaurant. It is a traditional Irish pub with all the classic dishes you will want to try in Ireland, like hearty stews and fish and chips. They also have a full bar, so you can enjoy a pint to end your day. The Laurels Pub is another great option, especially if there is live music that evening.
Killarney 2 Day Itinerary: See More of the National Park
If you have two days, you are in the perfect position. Following the 1 day Killarney itinerary above, you will have already seen Ross Castle, part of Killarney National Park, and explored the town. With a second day, you can go deeper into the park and see some of the most scenic spots in the area.
Start your second day by heading back into Killarney National Park, this time going further than Ross Castle. If you have a car, drive toward the Upper Lake area. This is one of the most beautiful parts of the park and feels much quieter than the areas closest to town.

Along the way, stop at Ladies View for one of the most famous viewpoints in Killarney. The panoramic views of the lakes and mountains are incredible, especially on a clear day. From there, continue toward Upper Lake and take your time walking along the water. There are several scenic spots nearby, including Derrycunnihy Falls and the Owengarriff River, that are worth short stops.

If you have a car, spend your third day driving part of the Ring of Kerry. Killarney is one of the main starting points for this scenic route, and even driving a small section of it is worth your time. Head west of Killarney and stop at scenic pull-offs, beaches, and small villages along the way. The views of the coastline, mountains, and countryside are some of the best in Ireland.

There is a cozy fireplace, a full kitchen for guests to use, and the staff can help you plan hikes and tours during your stay.
Mid-Range: Murphy’s Townhouse, Killarney – Murphy’s Townhouse is perfect if you want something comfortable, central, and reasonably priced. Located right in the heart of town, you will be within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the park. The rooms are simple and cozy, and one of the biggest perks is that you are connected to Murphy’s Bar and Restaurant, one of the best traditional pubs in Killarney. It is a great option if you want convenience without splurging on a luxury hotel.
Luxury: The Killarney Park – If you want a high-end experience, The Killarney Park is one of the top luxury hotels in town. This five-star, family-run hotel is located right in the center of Killarney, so you still have easy access to everything on your Killarney itinerary. The hotel features elegant rooms, two on-site restaurants, a bar, a pool, and a full-service spa. It is the perfect place to relax after long days exploring Killarney National Park.

If you prefer fewer crowds, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons, such as April or October. I visited in October, and it was one of my favorite trips. The park was quieter, the fall colors were beautiful, and it felt more relaxed overall. Just be prepared for cooler temperatures and some rain.
Winter is the quietest time to visit. While the weather can be cold and wet, the town still has a cozy atmosphere, especially in the pubs. Some tours and attractions may have limited hours, so plan accordingly.
No matter when you visit, pack layers and a waterproof jacket. The weather in Ireland can change quickly, even within the same day.
