Ten Years a Nomad by Matthew Kepnes: Book Review

Ten Years a Nomad: Matthew Kepnes, aka Nomadic Matt, shares his adventures from ten years of travel worldwide. He began to travel after a few short trips to Costa Rica and Thailand, where he realized that there was more to life than sitting in an office for fifty weeks each year waiting for two weeks of vacation.

Matt lives the life of a true backpacker for ten years while searching for love, living in hostels, and starting his popular travel website NomadicMatt.com. He opens up about traveling being the best thing we could do while also sharing the troubles and downsides he faces on the road.

If you are someone who:

  1. is feeling stuck after more than a year without travel
  2. dreams of traveling the world with little to no responsibilities
  3. wants to experience the backpacking lifestyle, no matter your age
  4. all of the above

This book is exactly what you need.

Like everyone else, I have been going crazy without traveling for the past fifteen months. During that time, I decided that I would travel the world for at least one year one day. I knew I would have to save money and choose where to go, but there were a lot of other things I wondered about. Where do I stay? What if I get robbed or scammed? How do I make friends?

This book has washed away all (okay, most) of my worries regarding long-term travel. Not only that, but it has made me remember why I love to travel. Even when you are not traveling, this book will make you feel like you are.

As travel is slowly returning, I would highly recommend reading this book to remind yourself why you love to travel. If you are not a huge traveler yet, you will find inspiration in this book as travel becomes your new passion after a long time of being stuck at home.

I do wish this book included some of his favorite places to visit. I’m sure they can be found on the website, but it would be nice to have a small list to accompany his story. I always love hearing where people love, especially from seasoned travelers like Matt.

The end of the book has a list of nineteen lessons he learned while traveling abroad. The last and most important lesson: Just Go. And after reading this book of adventure, inspiration, and truth, you will want nothing more than to just go.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone, travelers and non-travelers alike.
