You Need to Visit Málaga: Spain’s Perfect Paradise

Warm, sandy beaches with soft, white sand. Old buildings and castles with history dating back nearly thirty centuries. The sun sparkling off the tile streets, lined with a variety of shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Located on the southern coast of Spain, Málaga has something for everyone, all packed into one perfect paradise. You need to visit Málaga! Some do not think it is worth a visit, others have never even heard of it. Málaga is even underrated in the travel community. Other blogs rarely post about it, and finding travel guides is difficult compared to other Spanish cities. It is such a beautiful, unique city, and I promise it is a spectacular place to visit. My first time in Málaga was when I spent a summer studying abroad in Spain. I had never heard of Málaga before seeing it on my trip’s itinerary. It was hard to find information on Málaga prior to my trip, but everything I could find made it sound like paradise. (Spoiler alert: It is paradise!) I took a train to Málaga after spending three days in Madrid where I had a difficult time adjusting to the new culture. Unlike Madrid, Málaga was small and easy to navigate. From the train station, I took a taxi down the main road along the coast. The Mediterranean water was a crystal blue stretching for miles. An abundance of people were walking along the beach or enjoying a sunny day in the sand. I knew instantly that Málaga was going to be a spectacular place. My favorite part of my visit to Málaga was the beautiful, vibrant sunsets over the Mediterranean. The best thing to do in Málaga is to take a walk along the beach in the evening. The colors in the sky are breathtakingly gorgeous. The streets in Málaga are beautiful too. There are old buildings lining every road, making you feeling like you are in an old Spanish movie. The pedestrian walkways in the town are paved with tiles and stones which the sun shines off perfectly. Furthermore, Málaga has an extensive amount of history. European history is interesting to me since it dates back so many years. In the United States where I am from, there are not any historical sites older than a few hundred years. In Málaga, the history dates back nearly thirty centuries. There is a Roman theater, a fortress, and my favorite, a castle. If you love history, read my post on Málaga’s history! The castle is on a hill just east of the city center. At the top, there are unbeatable panoramic views. From the sea and the coast to the city and the rolling hills behind the city, you can see all of Málaga in one spot. Finally, Málaga is also a great place to practice your Spanish. I took a two week Spanish course in Málaga which helped me greatly when I was exploring the city on my own. I came into the trip knowing some basic Spanish from high school, but I did not know how to order food, get directions, or anything else crucial to daily life. The Spanish class taught me all of this and more. Many of the lessons were not in a classroom, but in different parts of the city. One lesson was in the local market downtown. We had a list of food to find at the market and we had to use our Spanish to buy them. The best part was afterwards when we used the ingredients we bought to make Paella, a delicious local cuisine! Málaga truly is Spain’s perfect paradise, and not taking time to visit is a huge mistake!
