Why Ninh Binh Is Worth Visiting

Here are the main reasons Ninh Binh deserves a spot on your Vietnam itinerary:

  • The scenery is stunning. Ninh Binh is surrounded by limestone karsts rising out of rice paddies and rivers. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Vietnam.
  • Trang An is worth the trip alone. The boat tour takes you through caves and past ancient temples set against limestone cliffs. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best things I did in Vietnam.
  • Tam Coc is a great place to base yourself. It is small, easy to get around by bike, and has a relaxed atmosphere. I could have easily spent more time there.
  • It is an easy break from Hanoi. Ninh Binh is about two hours south by train or bus and feels completely different from the city. It is one of the best day trips you can do from Hanoi.
  • The main sites are close together. You can see a lot in one day without feeling rushed. Staying overnight gives you even more flexibility.
  • It works for all types of travelers. Solo travelers, couples, families, slow travelers. The mix of outdoor activities, history, and scenery means there is something for everyone.
  • One of the things I liked most about Ninh Binh was how chill it was. After spending time in larger cities, wandering around Tam Coc and spending time in nature was a nice change of pace.

Reasons Ninh Binh Might Not Be Worth Visiting

Ninh Binh will not be everyone’s favorite stop in Vietnam.

If you prefer large cities, nightlife, museums, and busy urban areas, Ninh Binh may feel too quiet. Most people visit for the scenery, boat tours, cycling, and outdoor activities rather than city attractions.

You also do not need a long visit. While I enjoyed spending a couple of nights there, many travelers are happy with a day trip from Hanoi.

Even with those things in mind, I still think Ninh Binh is one of the best places to visit in Vietnam.

Top Things to Do in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh has a lot to offer for a relatively small area. Here are the best things to do, whether you are there for a full day or staying a few nights.

Trang An Boat Tour
Trang An is the highlight of Ninh Binh and one of the best things I did on my entire Vietnam trip. You board a small rowboat and your guide rows you through a network of waterways, caves, and ancient temples set against towering limestone cliffs. The whole tour takes around two to three hours and covers several caves and temple stops along the way. It is peaceful, beautiful, and well worth the time. Tickets are around 250,000 VND per person and include the boat and a guide.

Mua Caves
Mua Caves is the climb most people have seen in photos of Ninh Binh. You climb around 500 steps to the top of a limestone peak and the views over the rice paddies and karst landscape are incredible. It is worth every step but go early in the morning before the heat builds up. Entry is around 100,000 VND per person.

Bich Dong Pagoda
Bich Dong is a beautiful pagoda built into the side of a limestone cliff. It has three levels connected by stone steps, and each level has its own cave temple. It is quieter than some of the other sites and has a really peaceful atmosphere. Entry is cheap and it does not take long to explore, making it an easy addition to a full day itinerary.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital
Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries and the temple complex here is one of the most historically significant sites in the region. The temples are dedicated to the Dinh and Le dynasties and the setting, surrounded by mountains and rice fields, makes it feel very different from temples you might visit in a city. Entry is around 20,000 VND per person.

Cycling Around Tam Coc
Renting a bike and cycling around Tam Coc is one of the best ways to spend time in Ninh Binh. The roads are flat, the scenery is beautiful, and you can stop wherever you want. It is relaxed and gives you a completely different perspective on the area compared to being on a tour.

Best Tours in Ninh Binh

If you want an easier way to see Ninh Binh, booking a tour is a great option. A guided tour makes it so you don’t have to plan a thing; just show up and have fun.

Here are the best tours in Ninh Binh:

Day Trip from Hanoi vs Staying Overnight

A day trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is absolutely doable and worth it if that is all the time you have. The journey takes around two hours by train or bus and gives you enough time to see Trang An, Mua Caves, or Hoa Lu before heading back.

That said, staying overnight makes the experience significantly better. I stayed two nights in Tam Coc and it gave me time to do all the main sites without rushing, cycle around the village, and actually enjoy the atmosphere. A day trip means you are always watching the clock. Staying overnight means you can slow down and get more out of the place.

If you are on the fence, even one night makes a big difference. Tam Coc is a great base and there are plenty of guesthouses and small hotels to choose from at reasonable prices.

How Long to Spend in Ninh Binh

One day is enough to see the main highlights if you are visiting as a day trip from Hanoi. You can realistically fit in Trang An and one or two other sites if you plan your time well.

Two days is the sweet spot. This gives you time to do Trang An, Mua Caves, Bich Dong, and Hoa Lu without feeling rushed. You also have time to cycle around Tam Coc and enjoy the village atmosphere.

Three or more days works well if you want to use Ninh Binh as a base to explore the surrounding area more slowly or if you just want to relax and enjoy the scenery at your own pace.

Where to Stay in Ninh Binh

Tam Coc is the best area to stay in Ninh Binh. It is central, charming, and puts you within easy reach of all the main sites. Most guesthouses and hotels here are small, affordable, and well run.

Budget: Tam Coc Rice Fields Resort is a popular option with basic rooms, a good location, and rice field views. Great value for the price.

Mid-range: Tam Coc Garden Resort offers comfortable rooms surrounded by gardens and rice paddies. It is a step up in comfort without being expensive.

Luxury: Emeralda Resort Ninh Binh is the best luxury option in the area. It has beautiful bungalows, a pool, and is set in a stunning natural setting. Worth the splurge if you want a more resort style experience.

Tips for Visiting Ninh Binh

  • Book Trang An tickets in advance during peak season. It is the most popular site in the area and can get busy.
  • Start Mua Caves early in the morning. The climb is around 500 steps and gets tiring in the heat.
  • Rent a bike to get around Tam Coc. It is cheap, easy, and one of the best ways to see the area.
  • Bring cash. Smaller restaurants and boat operators often prefer it.
  • Pack a light jacket if visiting between November and January. Evenings can feel cool and hotel pools will likely be cold.

Yes, Ninh Binh is absolutely worth visiting. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Vietnam and offers a completely different experience from the country’s bigger cities. Whether you go for a day trip from Hanoi or stay a few nights in Tam Coc, you will not regret adding it to your itinerary.

It is the kind of place that is easy to love, easy to get to, and easy to enjoy at whatever pace suits you. If you are planning a trip to Vietnam, put Ninh Binh on the list.
