Cambodia and Vietnam are two of my favorite countries in Southeast Asia, and combining them into one trip is absolutely worth it. However, choosing the best time to travel to these countries can make a huge difference in your experience because weather conditions vary a lot across both countries.
I traveled through Cambodia and southern Vietnam from late March into April, and while I loved the trip, the heat became extremely intense by the end. Later, I visited northern Vietnam in November and had much cooler, more comfortable weather for sightseeing.
For most travelers, the best time to travel to Cambodia and Vietnam together is usually from November through February, when temperatures are more manageable and conditions are generally drier across much of both countries.
That said, every season has pros and cons depending on your budget, crowd tolerance, and the regions you plan to visit.
Keep reading to determine the best time of year to travel to Cambodia and Vietnam based on weather, budget, crowds, and more.

Best Time to Travel to Cambodia and Vietnam by Season
Planning a trip through both Cambodia and Vietnam can be slightly tricky because the weather varies across different parts of Vietnam throughout the year.
In general, the best overlap of good weather across both countries is from November through February, though every season has advantages depending on your budget, itinerary, and tolerance for heat and rain.
Cool and Dry Season (November to February)
This is generally the best time to travel through both Cambodia and Vietnam. Temperatures are more comfortable, humidity is lower, and rainfall is reduced across much of the region.
This season works especially well if your itinerary includes:
- Angkor Wat
- Ho Chi Minh City
- Hanoi
- Ha Long Bay
- beach destinations in southern Vietnam or Cambodia
I visited northern Vietnam in November and found the weather ideal for sightseeing compared to the much hotter conditions I experienced in Cambodia and southern Vietnam during April.
Because conditions are at their best during this season, it is also the busiest time for tourism.

Pros:
- Most comfortable temperatures
- Lower humidity
- Best sightseeing conditions
- Great weather for beaches and cities
Cons:
- Larger crowds
- Higher hotel prices
- Popular attractions can feel busy
Best for:
- First-time visitors
- Multi-country itineraries
- Temple visits
- Outdoor activities
Hot Season (March to April)
March and April bring much hotter temperatures across Cambodia and southern Vietnam. The heat and humidity can become intense, especially during the afternoons.

I traveled through Cambodia and southern Vietnam during this time and still loved the experience, but by April the heat felt exhausting during long sightseeing days.
Northern Vietnam is usually more manageable during spring, though temperatures still begin warming up later in the season.
Pros:
- Smaller crowds than peak season
- Dry weather in many areas
- Good beach conditions
Cons:
- Extreme heat in Cambodia and southern Vietnam
- Humidity
- More physically tiring sightseeing
Best for:
- Budget-conscious travelers
- Beach trips
- Travelers comfortable with heat
Rainy Season (May to October)
The rainy season brings greener landscapes, lower prices, and fewer tourists across much of Cambodia and southern Vietnam. Rain showers are often heavy but usually do not last all day.
Vietnam becomes more complicated during this period because weather patterns vary significantly by region. Northern Vietnam can become very rainy and humid during summer, while central Vietnam often experiences its wettest weather later in the year.
Despite the rain, this can still be a great time to travel if you want lower prices and fewer crowds.

Pros:

- Lower accommodation prices
- Smaller crowds
- Green rice fields and countryside scenery
- More relaxed travel atmosphere
Cons:
- Heavy rain showers
- Humidity
- Less predictable weather
- Possible flooding in some areas
Best for:
- Budget travel
- Photography
- Green season scenery
- Slower-paced trips
Best Months to Visit Cambodia and Vietnam
Because Vietnam has very different weather patterns depending on the region, choosing the best month for a combined Vietnam and Cambodia trip can feel confusing at first.
Some months are much better for northern Vietnam, while others work better for Cambodia and southern Vietnam. Here’s a simpler breakdown of the best times to visit both countries together based on weather, crowds, prices, and overall travel experience.
Best Overall Months: November to February
For most travelers, November through February is the best time to travel through both Cambodia and Vietnam.
This period offers the best overlap of comfortable temperatures, lower humidity, and drier weather across much of both countries. It’s especially good for temple visits, city sightseeing, Ha Long Bay cruises, and beach destinations in southern Vietnam.
This is also peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.
Best Months for Budget Travel: May to September
If lower prices and fewer tourists are more important than perfect weather, the rainy season can actually be a great time to visit.
Rain showers are common, but they are often short and heavy rather than lasting all day. Landscapes become much greener during this period, especially around rice fields and rural areas.
This is one of the best times for budget-conscious travelers.
Best Months for Beaches: December to March
If your trip includes beaches in southern Vietnam or Cambodia’s islands, the dry season usually offers the best conditions.
You’ll generally get sunnier weather, calmer water, and more reliable ferry conditions during this time.
Hottest Months to Avoid: April and May
April and May are usually the most difficult months for sightseeing in Cambodia and southern Vietnam because of the intense heat and humidity.
I visited during April and still enjoyed the trip, but long days outdoors became exhausting at times, especially in Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh City.
Most Underrated Month: October
October is one of the most underrated months for visiting Vietnam and Cambodia together.
Northern Vietnam starts cooling down, Cambodia begins drying out after the rainy season, and landscapes remain green from the previous months. Crowds are also much smaller than during peak season.
Understanding Vietnam’s Regional Weather Differences
One thing that makes planning a combined Cambodia and Vietnam trip slightly complicated is that Vietnam’s weather changes significantly from north to south.
Northern Vietnam destinations like Hanoi and Ha Long Bay experience cooler winters and more noticeable seasonal changes.
Central Vietnam, including places like Hoi An and Da Nang, often has a different rainy season than the rest of the country, especially later in the year.
Southern Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City, stays warm year-round with a more traditional dry and rainy season pattern similar to Cambodia.
Because of these regional differences, there is no single “perfect” month for every part of Vietnam. However, November through February usually provides the best overall overlap for visiting both Vietnam and Cambodia together.
