What is FareDrop?

FareDrop is a cheap flight alert service that sends emails and notifications from the app when flight prices drop below average. The deals are sporadic, and you will get them as flight prices from your home airports drop. You can designate your home airports and other alert preferences in your account.

You can also see all the current flight deals in your FareDrop account. This method is a great way to see if destinations you’ve been eyeing have cheap flights. Or maybe a good deal will spark your next trip.

FareDrop will not alert you or track specific flights with specific dates for you. You must be flexible with your dates and destinations if you want to take maximum advantage of the deals.

However, with up to 80% savings on the deals they send ($450 savings per flight on average), you just need to book one flight deal per year to make up for your annual FareDrop membership fee.

How Does FareDrop Work?

FareDrop is easy to use and sign up for, and it’s easy to choose the flight deals you want to get.

  1. Choose one of the FareDrop plans detailed in the next section. The plan you choose determines what type of deals you get.
  2. Select your home airport(s), which can include up to ten airports in the US or Canada. These are the airports you will get flight deals for.
  3. Choose the travel regions you want to get deals for. These are the destinations you want your flight deals to be for. You also get to customize the maximum price you are willing to pay for flights to each region.
  4. Other settings you can adjust include whether or not you want deals from budget airlines if you want flights with stops, and what months you want deals for.
  5. You will now get deals in your inbox or the FareDrop app according to your preferences. You can adjust the settings at any time in your account.

You can also view the current deals for your departure airports on the deals page using your FareDrop login.

When you get a flight alert or view one of the deals on their site, you will see the following information:

  • Departure airport
  • Class (economy or business)
  • Deal price
  • The “usual” or average price you can expect to pay for the route
  • The months when the deal is available.

When viewing any deal page, you just need to click the month you want, and you will be taken to Google Flights, where you can see the specific flight information and book.

Here’s an example of a deal from Chicago to Dublin that is over 50% cheaper than average prices.

FareDrop Deal Search Tool

A new feature added in February of 2024 is the deal search tool. With this feature, you can search for deals on any route.

Just put in your departure airport, where you want to go, and the flight class you want (economy or business). Then you’ll see the best deals for every month.

Each deal will also be color-coded so you know whether or not it is a good deal. Green is a good deal, yellow is the average price, and red means prices are high.

You can use the deal search on the app or website.

Here is an example of a deal search from FareDrop from Chicago (ORD) to Madrid (MAD) for economy deals.

Flight prices for February, March, and April are low, whereas June and July are high. If you see a month and price you like, click and it will take you to Google Flights to see the flight information.

FareDrop Plans

FareDrop has multiple plans depending on how much you want to spend and what type of flight deals you want in your inbox.

There is a free plan and a paid plan. Here is the breakdown of the costs and plans, including what FareDrop flights are included with each.

  • Limited Plan (Free) – Includes limited access to domestic economy deals and international deals (from the US and Canada)
  • Pro Plan ($99) – Domestic economy deals, international economy deals, international business deals. Allows you to customize your alerts

Each FareDrop cost listed above is the annual price, and you will be charged automatically every year until you cancel.

FareDrop App

FareDrop also has an app to get flight deals and alerts on your phone.

Here are the two FareDrop app options:

The app will send you flight alerts for the filters you have sent up in your account.

Is FareDrop Worth It?

I think FareDrop is worth it because of the filters it provides and the app where you can check for deals at any time.

First, you have a lot of options to filter out your fares. You can filter specific price ranges, continents, and whether or not you want budget airlines included. Then, when you get a deal alert, you know it will match your criteria.

Second, they have an app, so you can immediately get notified of deals no matter where you are. I also think the app is easy to use, so I can check for current deals whenever possible.

And remember, with any cheap flight alert service, you need to be flexible with your dates and destinations to take advantage of them. Suppose you want to travel to a specific place or only have certain dates you are willing to fly. In that case, you’re chances of finding a deal are lower than if you are open to anywhere and anytime.

You don’t have to be totally flexible, but try finding more open dates to travel and consider destinations you haven’t considered before. Thanks to a cheap flight deal, you might discover your new favorite country or city.

Who Owns It?

So who owns FareDrop?

It’s owned by Kara and Nate, travel YouTubers who have been to over 100 countries together.

Part of why they have been able to travel full-time since 2016 is because they find cheap flight deals.

They wanted to share these deals with you and me, so they created FareDrop.

They also use a lot of points in miles to travel for free.
