Arriving In Hallstatt By Train
A journey by train holds its own charm, combining comfort with scenic routes, and I’m not kidding when I say I could ride trains through Austria for weeks on end. Furthermore, Austria has a good rail network that makes it an easy choice to reach Hallstatt.
You can start your journey from any major city in Austria—Vienna, Innsbruck, or Salzburg. There are also tours from Vienna to Hallstatt if you don’t want to book your own travel.
You can get to Attnang-Puchheim, a train station on the main rail line between Vienna and Salzburg. From Attnang-Puchheim, you’ll then take a regional train to Hallstatt. The transfer at Attnang-Puchheim is super easy since the station is so small.
Upon reaching the Hallstatt station, you have to take the Hallstatt ferry across the lake to Hallstatt. This crossing will only make you more excited for the time you’ll be spending in Hallstatt, and it’s a nice bonus to the rail route. The train station and boat dock are conveniently located close to each other, and the ferry runs in coordination with the train schedule.
Traveling to Hallstatt by train is not just easy, but it’s one of the prettiest and most comfortable ways to get to the town.
How To Get To Hallstatt, Austria, By Car
If you prefer to be in control of your schedule and love beautiful scenic routes, getting to Hallstatt by car is the perfect choice. You will need to spend some time planning if you decide to drive to Hallstatt.
If you need a rental car, I highly recommend comparing prices on Discover Cars.
1. General Directions
The general route to Hallstatt requires you to take the A1 motorway from Salzburg or Vienna. From the exit at “Golling-Abtenau”, follow the B166 or B145, which leads directly to Hallstatt. The journey should be around an hour and twenty minutes from Salzburg, or about three hours from Vienna.
2. Important Tips And Reminders
- Be aware that driving in Austria requires a Vignette toll sticker on all motorways. They can be purchased at border crossings, petrol stations, and rest stops before entering the country.
- Weather conditions in Austria can be unpredictable, so always check the local weather forecast before setting off to avoid any dangerous road conditions.
- Hallstatt is a small and sensitive area with limited parking. Consider utilizing the car park P1 outside the town and take the shuttle into the heart of the village. Preserving the enchanting nature of Hallstatt is a communal responsibility of both the residents and visitors alike.
- Finally, remember to carry your international driver’s permit if you’re not from an EU country. The adventure of a road trip is only fun when you follow the rules and regulations.

It’s essential to check the most up-to-date schedule for your intended travel date, as it may vary depending on the season. Tickets are purchasable from the driver or from ticket machines at the bus station. Note that payment in exact change may be required on board.
3. Travel Tips
If you’re traveling in peak tourist season in Hallstatt, be prepared for potentially crowded buses. Consider bringing a snack, water, and any necessary entertainment, like a good book or some music, for a comfortable journey.
Although the bus journey may take a little longer than other methods of transport to Hallstatt, the captivating landscapes and opportunity to experience Austria at a leisurely pace make this a worthwhile choice for many travelers.
