Galway was one of my favorite stops in Ireland because it felt exactly how I pictured Ireland before visiting. Between the cobblestone streets, lively pubs, traditional music, and fish and chips, it had the atmosphere I hoped to find.

For me, Galway is absolutely worth visiting, but I do not think you need a long time there.

I think Galway works best as a place to spend a night or two while exploring western Ireland. The city itself is fun to wander through, but it is also a great base for day trips to places like the Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, and Connemara.

Why Galway Is Worth Visiting

One of the biggest reasons I think Galway is worth visiting is because it felt exactly how I imagined Ireland before going.

When I pictured Ireland, I imagined lively pubs, traditional music, cobblestone streets, and a smaller city with a lot of character. Galway ended up feeling like all of those things in one place.

I also liked that Galway felt much different from Dublin. It is smaller, easier to explore, and has a more local atmosphere. You can spend time wandering through the city center, stopping in pubs, listening to live music, and exploring without needing a packed itinerary.

Another thing that makes Galway stand out is its location. Beyond the city itself, Galway is one of the best places to use as a base for western Ireland. You can easily visit places like the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, and the Aran Islands without constantly changing hotels.

I do not think Galway needs a long stay, but I do think it deserves a place on an Ireland itinerary. Even spending one or two nights here gives you a chance to experience a side of Ireland that felt very different from the larger cities.

Best Things To Do In Galway

Even though Galway is a smaller city, there is still plenty to do during your visit. Between the pubs, historic sites, and nearby day trips, it is easy to fill a day or two here.

• Explore Galway’s pub scene: One of my favorite parts of Galway was simply walking through the city and stopping into pubs. Traditional music, lively atmospheres, and cozy spaces are a huge part of what makes Galway feel so Irish.
• Walk through Eyre Square and the city center: Eyre Square sits in the center of Galway and is a good starting point for exploring. From there, you can wander through the streets, browse shops, and enjoy the energy around town.
• Visit the Cliffs of Moher: One of the biggest reasons many travelers stay in Galway is because it makes a great base for visiting the Cliffs of Moher. You can visit on a day trip or combine it with other stops around western Ireland.
• Take a trip to the Aran Islands: If you have extra time, the Aran Islands are another popular day trip from Galway and offer a different side of Ireland.
• Explore Connemara: Connemara National Park is known for its rugged scenery, mountains, and coastal landscapes. It is one of the most beautiful areas near Galway and another reason the city works well as a base.
• Explore Galway’s history: Spend some time seeing places like the Spanish Arch, Lynch’s Castle, and St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church to learn more about Galway’s history.

One thing I liked about Galway is that it felt easy. You can spend the day exploring the city itself or use it as a starting point to see more of western Ireland.

Reasons Galway Might Not Be Worth Visiting

As much as I enjoyed Galway, I can also understand why it may not be the right fit for every traveler. While I think Galway is absolutely worth visiting, there are a few things to consider before adding it to your itinerary.

• You do not need a long time here: Galway is fairly small, and I personally do not think you need more than one or two nights here unless you are using it as a base for day trips. You can see a lot of the city itself in a short amount of time.
• Many people use Galway as a base: One of Galway’s biggest strengths is its location near places like the Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, and Connemara. The downside is that some travelers end up spending more time outside Galway than in the city itself.
• The weather can be unpredictable: Like much of Ireland, Galway weather changes quickly. Rain and cloudy skies are common, so it helps to come prepared and stay flexible with plans.
• It is much quieter than larger cities: If you prefer large cities with major attractions, museums, and nonstop things to do, Galway may feel too small. Part of Galway’s appeal is slowing down and enjoying the atmosphere.

Even with those things in mind, I still think Galway deserves a spot on an Ireland itinerary. I just think it works best as part of a larger trip rather than the main destination.

Is Galway Worth Visiting For First-Time Ireland Visitors?

Yes, I think Galway is absolutely worth visiting for first-time visitors to Ireland.

For me, Galway felt like what I pictured Ireland would be before visiting. Between the cobblestone streets, traditional music, lively pubs, and smaller-city feel, it had a lot of the atmosphere I hoped to experience.

That said, I personally would not spend most of my Ireland trip in Galway. I think Galway works best as a one or two night stop or as a base for exploring western Ireland.

One of the biggest reasons I recommend Galway for first-time visitors is its location. You can easily visit places like the Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, and Connemara while staying in one place, which makes planning easier.

If you are building an Ireland itinerary, I think Galway deserves a spot. I just would not make it your only destination.

Galway Alternatives Worth Considering

If Galway does not sound like the right fit for your trip, there are several other places in Ireland worth considering.

Killarney: Killarney is a great option if you want a base for outdoor activities and scenic drives. It gives you easy access to Killarney National Park and the Ring of Kerry and works well for travelers focused on nature.

Cork: Cork offers more of a city atmosphere while still feeling smaller and more relaxed than Dublin. It is known for its food scene, colorful streets, and local feel.

Dingle: If you want a smaller town with traditional Irish charm, Dingle is a good option. It has coastal scenery, pubs, and a slower pace.

Westport: Westport is another smaller town known for its scenery, outdoor activities, and traditional atmosphere.

The good news is that Ireland is easy to combine into one trip. You do not really have to choose between Galway and other places since many travelers visit several towns and regions during the same itinerary.

So Is Galway Worth Visiting?

For me, Galway is absolutely worth visiting and ended up feeling exactly how I imagined Ireland before my trip.

Between the cobblestone streets, lively pubs, traditional music, and smaller-city atmosphere, Galway had a lot of the charm I hoped to find in Ireland. I loved spending time exploring the city and simply walking around without much of a plan.

That said, I personally do not think you need a long time in Galway itself. I think it works best as a one or two night stop or as a base for exploring places like the Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, and Connemara.

Part of what makes Galway so worth visiting is not just the city itself, but everything around it as well.

If you are planning a trip to Ireland, I think Galway deserves a place on your itinerary. I just would not make it your only stop.
