Whether you are looking for adventure, relaxation, nightlife, luxury resorts, or budget-friendly travel, Koh Samui has something for you.
I also think Koh Samui is one of the best introductions to Thailand’s islands. Unlike some of the more remote destinations, it is easy to reach thanks to direct flights from Bangkok, and arriving at Koh Samui Airport is an experience in itself. The airport is open-air, surrounded by tropical gardens, and feels more like a resort than an airport.

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island and one of the country’s most popular beach destinations. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, the island is known for its palm-lined beaches, luxury resorts, Buddhist temples, waterfalls, and vibrant nightlife.
While Koh Samui has grown into a major tourist destination, it still offers plenty of variety. You can spend your days relaxing on beaches like Chaweng, Lamai, and Silver Beach, visiting cultural attractions like the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem, or heading out on adventures to places like Ang Thong National Marine Park.
In recent years, Koh Samui has become even more famous thanks to HBO’s The White Lotus, with several scenes from season three filmed on the island. Today, visitors can even join tours that visit some of the show’s filming locations.
What I liked most about Koh Samui was how easy it was to explore. The island has a little bit of everything, making it a great choice whether it is your first time visiting Thailand or you are returning for another island getaway.
The Ultimate Koh Samui Itinerary
Koh Samui is large enough that you can easily spend a week or more here, but even with just a few days, you can see many of the island’s top attractions. From beautiful beaches and Buddhist temples to viewpoints and island-hopping adventures, there is no shortage of things to do.
No matter how much time you have, you’ll find recommendations for a one, two, three, four, or five-day Koh Samui itinerary below.
1-Day Koh Samui Itinerary: The Highlights
If you only have one day in Koh Samui, focus on some of the island’s most famous attractions. This itinerary combines temples, beaches, and one of Koh Samui’s most popular neighborhoods, giving you a great introduction to the island.
Start your morning at the Big Buddha, one of Koh Samui’s most recognizable landmarks. Standing 12 meters (39 feet) tall, this golden statue sits on a small island connected to the main island by a causeway and offers beautiful views of the surrounding coastline.

Just a few minutes away is Wat Plai Laem, a colorful Buddhist temple complex known for its striking architecture, giant statue of Guanyin, and peaceful lake filled with fish. It is one of the most photogenic spots on the island and well worth a visit.
After exploring the temples, head to Chaweng Beach, the most famous beach on Koh Samui. Spend some time relaxing on the sand, swimming in the warm water, or grabbing lunch at one of the many beachfront restaurants.
In the afternoon, make your way to Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. This charming waterfront area is filled with boutique shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars, making it one of the best places to stroll around on the island.
If you are visiting on a Friday, be sure to stay for the Fisherman’s Village Walking Street Market. It is one of the most popular night markets in Koh Samui, with local food, souvenirs, live music, and street performances. Even if you visit on another day, the area is still a great place to end your day with dinner overlooking the water.
2-Day Koh Samui Itinerary: Explore More of the Island
With two days in Koh Samui, you can venture beyond the island’s most famous attractions and discover some of its best beaches, viewpoints, and natural landmarks.
Follow the itinerary above, then on your second day in Koh Samui, start your morning at Silver Beach. This small stretch of sand is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, with clear water, soft sand, and a more relaxed atmosphere than nearby Chaweng Beach.
Next, continue south to Lamai Beach, Koh Samui’s second-largest beach. Lamai offers many of the same conveniences as Chaweng but with a more laid-back feel. It is a great place to grab lunch, relax by the water, or simply enjoy the scenery.
Afterward, visit the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks, also known as Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. These unusual rock formations have become one of Koh Samui’s most popular attractions and are a quick stop while exploring the southern part of the island.
For one of the best views in Koh Samui, head to Overlap Stone. Reaching the viewpoint requires a short uphill walk, but the panoramic views of the coastline are well worth the effort.

If you still have time in the afternoon, visit Na Muang Waterfall before making your way back across the island. Depending on the season, the waterfall can be quite impressive and offers a nice break from the beaches.
End your second day with dinner and sunset drinks along Lamai Beach or back in Fisherman’s Village, depending on which area you enjoyed most.
3-Day Koh Samui Itinerary: Ang Thong National Marine Park
If you have three days in Koh Samui, spend your final day visiting Ang Thong National Marine Park. This stunning archipelago of 42 islands is one of the most popular day trips from Koh Samui and easily one of the highlights of Thailand.
Most tours include hotel pickup and transportation by speedboat or larger tour boat. Throughout the day, you’ll visit several islands, stop at scenic viewpoints, and have opportunities to swim, snorkel, or kayak through the crystal-clear waters.
One of the most famous stops is Emerald Lake (Talay Nai), a beautiful saltwater lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. Many tours also stop at viewpoints that offer incredible panoramic views of the islands scattered throughout the Gulf of Thailand.
Depending on the tour you choose, lunch is often included, along with snorkeling equipment and kayaking gear. While the day can be active, it is suitable for most travelers and provides a completely different experience from exploring Koh Samui itself.
After returning to Koh Samui in the late afternoon, spend your final evening relaxing on the beach, enjoying a sunset dinner, or exploring one of the island’s night markets. It is the perfect way to wrap up your time on one of Thailand’s most beautiful islands.

4-Day Koh Samui Itinerary: Slow Down and Relax
With four days in Koh Samui, you can enjoy a slower pace while still seeing the island’s highlights. Follow the itinerary above, then spend your fourth day exploring some of Koh Samui’s quieter beaches or revisiting your favorite spots.
You could relax at Choeng Mon Beach, spend more time at Silver Beach, or visit additional viewpoints around the island. If you’re looking for something different, consider booking a Thai cooking class, enjoying a spa day, or exploring one of Koh Samui’s local markets.

5-Day Koh Samui Itinerary: The Complete Experience
If you have 5 days in Koh Samui, you’ll have enough time to see the island’s major attractions while still leaving room to relax.
Follow the itinerary above, then use your fifth day for a snorkeling tour, beach club visit, or a White Lotus filming locations tour. Since several scenes from HBO’s The White Lotus season three were filmed on Koh Samui, these tours have become increasingly popular and offer a fun way to see some of the island’s most impressive resorts and viewpoints.
You could also spend the day exploring parts of the island you may have missed earlier in your trip, enjoying longer beach days, or simply taking advantage of Koh Samui’s laid-back atmosphere. Five days strikes a great balance between sightseeing and relaxation, making it an ideal amount of time for many travelers.
6+ Days in Koh Samui
If you’re lucky enough to have six or more days in Koh Samui, there is no need to rush. Follow the itinerary above, then spend your extra time enjoying the island at your own pace.
Additional days can be used for more beach time, spa treatments, Muay Thai classes, additional snorkeling trips, sunset cruises, or simply discovering restaurants, cafes, and viewpoints around the island. Koh Samui is the kind of destination where doing less can sometimes be just as rewarding as filling every day with activities.

Despite being an island, Koh Samui is surprisingly easy to reach. Whether you are flying in from Bangkok or arriving from another destination in Thailand, there are several convenient ways to get there.
By Plane from Bangkok (Recommended)
The easiest way to get to Koh Samui is by flying from Bangkok. Direct flights take just over an hour and arrive at Koh Samui Airport, one of the most unique airports in the world. With open-air terminals and tropical gardens throughout the property, it feels more like a resort than an airport.

By Ferry

Here are some general tips for visiting Koh Samui, regardless of whether you’re spending one day or five days on the island:
- Rent a Scooter: Scooters are one of the most popular ways to get around Koh Samui, but only rent one if you are comfortable driving. The island’s roads can be busy, steep, and winding in some areas.
- Download Grab: Grab is widely available on Koh Samui and is one of the easiest ways to get around if you do not want to rent a scooter.
- Start Early: Popular attractions like the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, and Overlap Stone are best visited earlier in the day before the crowds and heat arrive.
- Carry Some Cash: While many hotels, restaurants, and larger businesses accept credit cards, some markets, food stalls, and smaller shops still prefer cash.
- Book Popular Activities in Advance: Activities like Ang Thong National Marine Park tours can sell out during peak travel periods, so it is worth booking ahead.
- Stay Hydrated: Koh Samui is hot and humid throughout much of the year. Bring water with you, especially if you plan to spend the day sightseeing.

With a pool, beach bar, and social atmosphere, it is a great choice for solo travelers and anyone looking to meet other people while still getting a good night’s sleep.
Mid-Range: Centara Life Lamai Resort Samui – This is where I stayed during my time in Koh Samui, and I found it to be a great base for exploring the island. The resort offers modern rooms, a large swimming pool, and a convenient location in Lamai with easy access to beaches, restaurants, and many of Koh Samui’s top attractions.
Luxury: Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui – If you are looking to splurge, it is hard to beat the Four Seasons. Set on a hillside overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the resort features stunning villas, multiple restaurants, exceptional service, and a private beach. Fans of The White Lotus may also recognize it as one of the filming locations from season three.
