The best time to visit Belize depends on what kind of trip you want, whether that’s beach weather, snorkeling and diving conditions, wildlife experiences, or lower prices during the rainy season.

When I booked my trip to Belize, I honestly chose January because I wanted to escape winter in Chicago, not because I knew it was one of the best times to visit. Luckily, January ended up being an excellent time for warm weather, beach days, and exploring around the country.

For most travelers, the best time to visit Belize is during the dry season from November through April, when temperatures are warm, humidity is lower, and conditions are best for beaches, snorkeling, and outdoor activities.

Read on to learn more about Belize’s weather, climate, crowds, and more.

Best Time to Visit Belize by Season

Belize has two main travel seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Both offer very different experiences depending on whether you prioritize beach weather, diving conditions, wildlife, or lower prices.

Here’s what to expect throughout the year.

Dry Season in Belize (November to April)

The dry season is generally considered the best time to visit Belize. Temperatures are warm, humidity is lower, and rainfall is much less common compared to the summer and fall months.

This is the best time for:

  • beach vacations
  • snorkeling and diving
  • island hopping
  • visiting Mayan ruins
  • outdoor adventures

The waters around Belize are usually calmer and clearer during this season, making conditions especially good for snorkeling and diving along the Belize Barrier Reef.

Because the weather is at its best, this is also peak tourist season. Prices for hotels and tours are usually highest between December and March.

Pros:

  • Sunny beach weather
  • Lower humidity
  • Excellent snorkeling and diving conditions
  • Best conditions for outdoor activities

Cons:

  • Larger crowds
  • Higher hotel prices
  • Busy beaches and islands during holidays

Best for:

  • First-time visitors
  • Beach trips
  • Diving and snorkeling
  • Multi-destination Belize itineraries

Rainy Season in Belize (May to October)

The rainy season brings hotter temperatures, higher humidity, and more frequent tropical rain showers to Belize.

Rain usually falls in short but heavy bursts, especially during the afternoon or evening, meaning you can still have plenty of sunshine during the day.

This season also brings greener landscapes, fewer tourists, and lower prices throughout much of the country.

The rainy season can actually be a great time for:

  • wildlife spotting
  • rainforest experiences
  • budget travel
  • quieter beach destinations

Hurricane season also overlaps with this period, especially from June through November, though direct storms are still relatively uncommon.

Pros:

  • Lower hotel prices
  • Smaller crowds
  • Lush green landscapes
  • Great wildlife viewing opportunities

Cons:

  • Higher humidity
  • More frequent rain showers
  • Hurricane season risk
  • Less predictable weather

Best for:

  • Budget travel
  • Rainforest trips
  • Wildlife experiences
  • Fewer crowds

Best Time to Visit Belize for Different Activities

The best time to visit Belize can also depend on what you want to do during your trip. Some months are better for snorkeling and diving, while others are ideal for wildlife viewing or avoiding crowds.

Best Time for Snorkeling and Diving

The best time for snorkeling and diving in Belize is usually from March through June, when ocean conditions are calm and underwater visibility is often at its best.

This is one of the most popular times to visit destinations like the Belize Barrier Reef and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

Best Time to See Whale Sharks in Belize

Whale shark season in Belize typically runs from April through June.

During this period, whale sharks gather near Gladden Spit off the coast of southern Belize, giving travelers a rare opportunity to snorkel or dive near these massive fish.

Tours are weather-dependent and should usually be booked in advance during peak season.

Best Time for Beach Vacations

For beach weather and island trips, January through April is generally the best time to visit Belize.

This period offers warm temperatures, lower humidity, and less rain, making it ideal for relaxing on islands like Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.

Best Time for Wildlife and Rainforests

The rainy season from May through October is often the best time for wildlife viewing and rainforest scenery in Belize.

Rainfall helps the jungles become greener and more active, especially for birdwatching and exploring waterfalls or river areas inland.

Best Time to Avoid Crowds

If you want fewer crowds while still having decent weather, May and November are often great shoulder-season months to visit Belize.

These months can offer lower prices, quieter beaches, and fewer tourists without the peak rainy season conditions.

Belize Weather Month-by-Month

If you already have a season in mind, here’s what to expect throughout the year in Belize, including weather, crowds, and travel conditions.

January in Belize

January is one of the best months to visit Belize, with warm temperatures, lower humidity, and plenty of sunshine.

This is an excellent time for beach trips, snorkeling, and exploring the islands, though prices and crowds are higher because of peak travel season.

Best for:

  • Beach vacations
  • Escaping winter weather
  • Snorkeling and diving

February in Belize

February continues the dry season with warm weather and excellent outdoor conditions throughout the country.

Crowds are slightly smaller than during the holiday season, but popular beach destinations still stay busy.

Best for:

  • Island trips
  • Outdoor adventures
  • Dry weather travel

March in Belize

March is one of the most popular months to visit Belize because of the reliable beach weather and strong snorkeling and diving conditions.

Spring break travelers can make some areas busier, especially around the islands.

Best for:

  • Beach weather
  • Diving and snorkeling
  • Barrier reef trips

April in Belize

April brings hotter temperatures but still offers mostly dry conditions across Belize.

This is also one of the best months for whale shark tours near Gladden Spit.

Best for:

  • Whale shark tours
  • Beach vacations
  • Water activities

May in Belize

May marks the beginning of the rainy season, though many days still include long periods of sunshine.

Crowds begin decreasing, and hotel prices often become more affordable.

Best for:

  • Shoulder-season travel
  • Lower prices
  • Fewer crowds

June in Belize

June becomes hotter and more humid, with more frequent tropical rain showers throughout the country.

This is still a strong month for diving and snorkeling, especially earlier in the month.

Best for:

  • Budget travel
  • Diving trips
  • Green season scenery

July in Belize

July is hot, humid, and tropical, though rain showers are often short and heavy rather than lasting all day.

Tourist numbers are lower than during the dry season, making it a quieter time to visit.

Best for:

  • Rainforest trips
  • Wildlife experiences
  • Lower crowds

August in Belize

August continues the rainy season with warm temperatures and increasing humidity.

Travel deals are often easier to find during this period, especially outside major resort areas.

Best for:

  • Budget travel
  • Relaxed travel pace
  • Green landscapes

September in Belize

September is one of the wettest months in Belize and falls during the peak of hurricane season.

However, it is also one of the quietest and cheapest times to visit.

Best for:

  • Lowest prices
  • Fewer tourists
  • Flexible travelers

October in Belize

October remains rainy and humid, though conditions slowly begin improving later in the month.

Travelers visiting during October should still monitor tropical weather forecasts closely.

Best for:

  • Budget-friendly trips
  • Rainforest scenery
  • Quiet travel experiences

November in Belize

November marks the beginning of the dry season, bringing lower humidity and more comfortable temperatures.

This is one of the best shoulder-season months to visit Belize because crowds are still fairly manageable.

Best for:

  • Shoulder-season travel
  • Outdoor activities
  • Better weather with smaller crowds

December in Belize

December is one of the busiest months in Belize thanks to warm weather and holiday travel.

Beach destinations and islands become especially popular during Christmas and New Year periods.

Best for:

  • Holiday vacations
  • Beach trips
  • Escaping winter weather

Hurricane Season in Belize

Hurricane season in Belize runs from June through November, with the highest storm risk usually falling between August and October.

While this can sound concerning, it’s important to know that Belize does not experience major hurricanes every year, and many travelers still visit during this period without major problems.

During hurricane season, you can expect:

  • higher humidity
  • more frequent tropical rain showers
  • rougher ocean conditions at times
  • occasional travel disruptions during stronger storms

One advantage of traveling during this season is the lower cost. Hotels and tours are often cheaper, and popular beach destinations tend to feel much quieter than during the dry season.

If you plan to visit Belize during hurricane season, it’s smart to:

  • purchase travel insurance
  • monitor weather forecasts before your trip
  • stay flexible with outdoor activities
  • book refundable accommodations when possible

Even during the rainy season, many days still include sunshine between storms, especially earlier in the season around June and July.

Belize Best Time to Visit: Final Thoughts

Me standing on the dock on a sunset.

For most travelers, the best time to visit Belize is during the dry season from November through April, when temperatures are warm, humidity is lower, and conditions are best for beaches, snorkeling, and outdoor activities.

This is the ideal time for visiting islands like Caye Caulker, exploring the Belize Barrier Reef, and spending time outdoors around the country.

If you want fewer crowds and lower prices, the rainy season can still be a great time to visit Belize, especially if you do not mind occasional tropical showers and higher humidity. The landscapes become much greener during this time, and wildlife viewing can be excellent.

I visited Belize in January without realizing it was one of the best times to go, and it ended up being a great balance of warm weather, beach days, and outdoor exploring.

No matter when you visit, Belize offers a mix of beaches, reefs, rainforests, and wildlife that makes it one of the most unique destinations in Central America.

Here are some travel planning resources I highly recommend for planning your trip to Belize.
