If you are planning a trip to Cambodia, there is a good chance Angkor Wat is one of the main reasons. Before visiting, I kept seeing photos of the temples and wondering if Angkor Wat was worth visiting or if it was one of those places that looks better online than in real life.

After visiting, I can confidently say it lived up to the hype.

Watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat ended up being one of the highlights of my trip to Cambodia, but what surprised me most was the scale of it all. I knew Angkor Wat was big, but I did not realize how massive the entire complex was or how much there was to explore beyond the main temple itself.

Why Angkor Wat Is Worth Visiting

Angkor Wat is one of those places that almost feels impossible to avoid when planning a trip to Cambodia. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Southeast Asia and a major reason many people visit the country in the first place.

What stood out to me most was the scale. I knew Angkor Wat would be impressive, but I did not realize how massive the entire complex really was before visiting. The temple itself is huge, but once you start exploring the surrounding temples, gates, pathways, and ruins, you quickly realize this is much more than a quick sightseeing stop.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat was easily one of the highlights of my Cambodia trip. Watching the sky slowly change behind the temple towers is one of those experiences that actually felt worth waking up early for. Yes, there are crowds, but seeing Angkor Wat in person felt completely different from seeing photos online.

I also think part of what makes Angkor Wat special is the history behind it. Built in the 12th century during the Khmer Empire, it is the largest religious monument in the world and has an incredible amount of detail throughout the carvings and architecture.

Another thing I did not expect was how much I enjoyed exploring the temples beyond Angkor Wat itself. Places like Ta Prohm and Bayon ended up being some of my favorite parts of the entire complex and made me glad I spent more than just a quick visit there.

I think Angkor Wat is one of those places that earns the hype. It felt much bigger, more interesting, and more memorable than I expected going in.

Things To Know Before Visiting Angkor Wat

Before visiting Angkor Wat, there are a few things I wish I had understood better ahead of time.

  • Angkor Wat is much larger than most people expect: I knew I was visiting a famous temple complex, but I did not realize how massive the entire area was. You are not just visiting one temple. Between Angkor Wat itself and surrounding temples like Ta Prohm, Bayon, and others, you can easily spend an entire day or multiple days exploring.
  • Sunrise means a very early morning: Sunrise at Angkor Wat ended up being one of the highlights of my Cambodia trip, but it comes with an early alarm. Expect to leave Siem Reap before sunrise if you want a good spot.
  • It gets hot fast: Cambodia can be extremely hot and humid, especially later in the day. Exploring temples often means a lot of walking with limited shade, so lightweight clothing, water, and comfortable shoes help a lot. Check out the best time to visit Angkor Wat.
  • Crowds are part of the experience: Angkor Wat is one of the most popular attractions in Southeast Asia, so you should expect other people around, especially during sunrise. Visiting earlier and exploring beyond the main temple can help.
  • I would seriously consider hiring a guide: I normally explore a lot of places on my own, but Angkor Wat is one place where I think having a guide makes a difference. The complex is huge, and understanding the history and stories behind the temples added a lot to the experience.

Knowing these things beforehand will help keep your expectations for Angkor Wat in check.

Reasons Angkor Wat Might Not Be Worth Visiting

As much as I loved Angkor Wat, I can understand why it may not be the perfect experience for everyone.

  • The crowds can be overwhelming: Angkor Wat is one of the most popular attractions in Southeast Asia, and that becomes especially obvious at sunrise. If you are expecting a quiet or off-the-beaten-path experience, that is probably not what you will find here.
  • It takes more time than people expect: I think a lot of people underestimate how large Angkor is before visiting. This is not a place where you quickly stop by for an hour. Between transportation, temple routes, and exploring the surrounding sites, it can easily turn into a full-day experience or longer.
  • The heat can make long days difficult: Cambodia gets hot quickly, and temple days usually involve a lot of walking outside with limited shade. If you are visiting during warmer months, expect some very hot afternoons.
  • Temple fatigue is real: Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and dozens of surrounding temples are all impressive, but trying to see too much too quickly can start to blur together. I think slowing down and spreading things out makes for a much better experience.

Even with those things in mind, Angkor Wat still ended up being one of the highlights of my Cambodia trip.

Is Sunrise At Angkor Wat Worth It?

One of the biggest questions people have before visiting Angkor Wat is whether waking up early for sunrise is actually worth it.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat ended up being one of the highlights of my Cambodia trip and one of my favorite experiences in Southeast Asia. Watching the sky slowly change behind the temple towers felt just as impressive in person as it does in photos. It was one of those moments where I immediately understood why so many people recommend doing it.

That said, sunrise is also one of the busiest times to visit. Expect crowds and a very early wake-up call, especially if you want a good viewing spot near the reflecting pools in front of the temple. You definitely will not have the place to yourself.

Even with the crowds, I still think sunrise is worth doing. I would rather deal with an early alarm and more people than miss one of the most memorable parts of visiting Angkor Wat.

Plus, the cooler morning temperatures make exploring the temples afterward much more enjoyable than starting later in the day.
