When I traveled around Cambodia, one place quickly became my favorite. Before going, I wondered if Siem Reap was worth visiting or if it was simply a place people used as a base for Angkor Wat.

I know most people visit because of Angkor Wat, and honestly, I get it. Watching sunrise at Angkor Wat ended up being the highlight of my trip to Cambodia. But what surprised me was how much I liked Siem Reap itself.

I liked spending time around the city, walking through the night markets, trying the food, and taking it easy between temple days. Instead of feeling like a place people simply pass through, it ended up becoming my favorite stop in the country.

Why Siem Reap Is Worth Visiting

I think a lot of people make the mistake of treating Siem Reap like a place you rush through in two days. See Angkor Wat, check it off the list, and move on.

I would not do that.

What I liked about Siem Reap was the pace. Temple days start early, especially if you are waking up for sunrise at Angkor Wat, so having a city where you can slow down afterward made a big difference. I liked being able to spend the rest of the day wandering night markets, grabbing food, getting a cheap massage, or just exploring around town.

I also think Siem Reap felt easier and more enjoyable than some other places I visited in Cambodia. It had enough restaurants, cafés, and things to do without feeling overwhelming or overly hectic.

And while Angkor Wat gets most of the attention, there is more nearby than people realize. Between Tonlé Sap, countryside tours, cooking classes, cultural shows, and local markets, I never felt like there was only one reason to be there.

That is probably why Siem Reap ended up being my favorite place in Cambodia.

Best Things To Do In Siem Reap

Even though Angkor Wat is the main reason many people visit Siem Reap, there is more to do than I expected. I thought I would mainly spend time temple hopping, but I ended up enjoying other parts of the city too.

  • Watch sunrise at Angkor Wat: This was easily the highlight of my Cambodia trip. It is an early wake-up call, but watching the sun come up over one of the most famous temple complexes in the world is worth it.
  • Explore the surrounding temples: Do not stop at Angkor Wat itself. Places like Bayon and Ta Prohm ended up being some of my favorite parts of the temple complex. The entire area is much larger than most people expect.
  • Walk through Pub Street and the night markets: After long days exploring temples, I liked spending time around the city at night. Pub Street and the nearby markets are busy, easy to walk through, and a good place to grab food or shop.
  • Take a boat trip to Tonlé Sap Lake: Visiting the floating villages on Tonlé Sap gives you a completely different side of Cambodia and was a nice break from temple sightseeing.
  • Take a cooking class: One of the best ways to learn more about Cambodian culture is through food. Cooking classes are a fun way to try local dishes and do something different.
  • Explore the countryside: If you have extra time, bike tours, ATV rides, and countryside experiences let you see areas outside the city and smaller villages nearby.
  • See a cultural performance: Siem Reap has traditional dance performances and cultural shows that give you a better look at Cambodia’s history and culture.

One thing I liked about Siem Reap is that every day felt different. One day could be all temples, while the next could be food, markets, or exploring outside the city.

Reasons Siem Reap Might Not Be Worth Visiting

I loved Siem Reap, but I can still see why it may not be the right fit for everyone.

  • You will need some early mornings: If Angkor Wat is the main reason you are visiting, expect early alarms. Sunrise at Angkor Wat was one of the highlights of my Cambodia trip, but getting there before sunrise means very early starts.
  • Temple hopping can start to blur together: Angkor is massive, and there are a lot of temples to explore. While they are all impressive, trying to pack too many into one day can get tiring, especially in the heat.
  • Siem Reap can feel busier than people expect: Around places like Pub Street and the night markets, there is a lot going on. I enjoyed the energy, but if you are looking for somewhere quiet and off the radar, that may not be what you find here.
  • Visiting Angkor Wat takes more planning than people realize: Between transportation, entrance passes, sunrise timing, and deciding which temples to visit, there is more to think through than simply showing up.

Even with that, Siem Reap still ended up being my favorite place in Cambodia.

Is Siem Reap Worth Visiting For First-Time Cambodia Visitors?

If you are visiting Cambodia for the first time, I think Siem Reap deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Angkor Wat was the highlight of my trip to Cambodia, and I think it is one of those places that is worth seeing at least once. Watching sunrise there ended up being one of the most memorable experiences from my time in Southeast Asia.

But I also would not visit Siem Reap expecting it to be only about temples. I ended up enjoying the city itself more than I thought I would. Between the food, night markets, and atmosphere around town, I liked having time to slow down after long days exploring Angkor.

Out of everywhere I visited in Cambodia, Siem Reap ended up being my favorite stop, which probably says enough on its own.

If you only have time for one place in Cambodia, I would seriously consider making it Siem Reap.

Siem Reap Alternatives Worth Considering

If Siem Reap does not sound like the right fit for your trip, there are a few other places in Southeast Asia worth considering.

  • Phnom Penh, Cambodia: If you want more of a city experience in Cambodia, Phnom Penh offers history, food, markets, and a different side of the country. Visiting places like the Royal Palace and learning more about Cambodia’s recent history gives a very different experience than Siem Reap.
  • Hoi An, Vietnam: Hoi An has a slower pace and a lot of charm. Like Siem Reap, it is easy to walk around, has great food, and feels smaller and easier to enjoy than a major city.
  • Chiang Mai, Thailand: Chiang Mai gives a similar balance of culture, food, markets, and a more relaxed atmosphere. It also became one of my favorite places in Southeast Asia.
  • Hanoi, Vietnam: If you want more city energy and street food while still getting history and culture, Hanoi can be a good alternative.

Each of these cities offers its own uniqueness and attractions, providing travelers with an alternative to Siem Reap while still experiencing the beauty and culture of Southeast Asia.

Is Siem Reap Worth Visiting?

Out of everywhere I visited in Cambodia, Siem Reap ended up being my favorite stop, and I honestly was not expecting that going into the trip.

Like most people, Angkor Wat was the main reason I wanted to visit. Watching sunrise there ended up being the highlight of my Cambodia trip and one of my favorite experiences in Southeast Asia. But what surprised me was how much I enjoyed everything outside of the temples too.

I liked spending time at the night markets, trying different foods, and having a place where I could slow down after long temple days. Siem Reap felt like more than just a jumping-off point for Angkor Wat, which is part of why I enjoyed it so much.

Is Siem Reap worth visiting for a few days?

Yes. I think three to four days is a great amount of time for Siem Reap. This gives you enough time for Angkor Wat, other nearby temples, and time to actually enjoy the city itself.

How many days should you spend in Siem Reap?

I would personally recommend at least three days. A lot of people rush through Siem Reap in one or two days, but I think extra time makes a big difference.

Is Siem Reap only worth visiting for Angkor Wat?

No. Angkor Wat is what gets most people there, but I ended up enjoying Siem Reap itself much more than I expected. Between the food, markets, and atmosphere around the city, I liked having extra time there.
